Costa Nova is a stretch of sandy beach known for its colorful painted and tiled striped houses.
In my research of Portugal, I found a photo of some striped houses and discovered they were in Aveiro – actually a beach close by. We must go there. We were staying in a gorgeous little town of Vouzela for a few days so Aveiro and Costa Nova was a nice day trip.
Little did we know when we drove to this beach that it was practically all striped houses. So much wow and color.
We walked along the beachfront at first and photographed the houses from a distance, then crossed over and walked along the boardwalk with its nautical themed pavers.
Some of the houses were tiled while others were just painted stripes. Intermingled with these were other colourful houses and shops.
Not all of the houses were new and freshly painted. We came across this lovely cottage. It seemed to stand out amongst the others on the boardwalk with its charm, so had to take lots of photos. Loved the matching letterbox.
Time for a break and coffee – possibly the best pastry I have had for a long time.
We then drove to Barra Beach to see a lighthouse which was visible from Costa Nova. In fact you can actually walk there from Costa Nova Beach.
The Lighthouse of Praia da Barra is an active lighthouse and was opened in 1893. it was so good to be able to get up close to it. There are actually three lighthouses in the area.
A quick walk around this pretty little town and down to the beach to watch the locals and tourists braving the cooler weather.
Then it was time to drive to Aveiro for a look around.
